- The title is a reference to the Oregon Trail, one of the paths westward through the Rocky Mountains. It is also notable for being the title of an early video game which simulated the journey west, both of which are featured in the episode. The title also references the Disney film Tron, about a game designer who is pulled into an inner world of computers and video games.
- Roger's Renegade persona is a parody of the title character of Renegade. The logos are similar as well.[1]
- Francine's outfit and hairstyle after Roger's "death" is a reference to Mary Tyler Moore's character of Beth Jarrett in Ordinary People.
